SMART
Iowa Grand Chapter Project 2008
S-upport M-ovement A-rthritis R-esearch T-argeted
Specifically — Osteoarthritis

What is Osteoarthritis? It is the most common form of arthritis, also referred to as degenerative joint disease. It affects cartilage, the hard slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones where they form a joint allowing the bones to glide over one another. Cartilage also acts as the shock absorber during physical movement. Osteoarthritis causes the surface layer of cartilage to wear away and slowly break down allowing the bones under the cartilage to rub together and cause pain, swelling and a decrease in motion. This often leads to the need for joint replacement.

The University of Iowa Roy J Carver and Lucille A Carver College of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery was ranked number 6 in the latest U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals rankings list. Dr. Joseph Buckwalter leads arthritis research in the department. The department is a leader in understanding the wear of materials used in joint replacement surgeries and has been a national and international leader in long-term studies of surgical procedures outcomes.

Our project involves the research of applying a gel to injuries around joints during surgery following an injury. The gel, having a high dose of some vitamin E and other antioxidants, would be applied near the bone’s break or tear in the tissue. These antioxidants would help fight the stress and injury’s damage and help the tissue regenerate and not breakdown. This breakdown is what seems to eventually lead to osteoarthritis as we age, and consequently joint replacement.

Join replacement is very common in our membership. Supporting the SMART project will help provide the necessary funds for this research to continue. There are many ways to help: purchase a Smiley Face pin, a memorial brick, or CD of our past grand organists and join us for a great afternoon of fun and frolic at the “Barnyard Blast” June 28, 2008 and Hit’m Straight Golf Outing July 18, 2008.
